Why Upgrade your Alternator? With all the new technology on the market, many cruisers like to add all the cruising comforts to their vessel. Well you need the power to run all that equipment. When upgrading your battery bank with about 200AH or more , your stock little alternator can not keep up with the demand . Fuel
Most of all fuel you buy at the local gas station contains contaminants in the tanks and contains about 10% ethanol additives in the product they carry . Ethanol is added to gasoline as mandated by the EPA to lower carbon emissions to make running of such engines more eco-friendly .
What is Ethanol?
Higher octane gas resists detonation, so it burns rather than exploding. But raising the octane level of gasoline is expensive; that’s why premium fuel costs more than regular. Adding ethanol reduces the tendency of low-grade gasoline to detonate, enabling our national vehicles to run on crappier gas.
Fuel and Marine use
Most Outboards are carbureted and don't get used everyday. Cars have a closed loop system where Outboards are an open fuel system. When gas that contains ethanol is used in an outboard and fuel sits in the carb or fuel system for sometime it breaks down. Gas will evaporate and leave the additives gas company's add to their fuel.(Example: Picture to the left)
